How to make your podcast sound professional
Get a quiet room with plenty of space for recording . . .
Creating a carpeted space near bookcases and avoid walls and windows. The bookcase will assist in acoustics as “room treatment” and understanding microphone placement and frequencies is a great start that will make your post-production podcast editors’ life happy and save you money. Most of all, a decent sized room with a bookcase and understanding that the microphone settings will make your podcast professional along with an experienced post-production podcast engineer.Understand indirect microphone placement techniques
Experimenting by speaking diagonally into the microphone and using a pop filter. A microphone angle assists in avoiding those bursts of air from the diaphragm while speaking. The pop filter protects against popping “P” and “B” sounds too.Use Modest input levels
Speak at a normal-to-loud voice aiming for -20 dB on the fader of the track recording audio. Don’t forget to test the levels. Also, set the level so that it never peaks above 0 dBFS, or goes “into the red.” It is better to be conservative and turn it down. The more head room the better for post-production.
Record high-resolution audio
Record your podcast at minimum 24-bit / 44.1 to 48 kHz WAV or AIFF file. 44.1kHz is stereo default for Pro Tools and 48 kHz is the broadcast standard. Warning! Do not record in M4A, AAC, or MP3/MP4 file format. The high frequencies are restricted, or compressed with lossy encoding that flatten the audio due to cutting off airy frequencies for a natural sound.Get a great delivery by working from an outline
Practice makes perfect! Have fun and don’t sweat it. Most professionals are unable to go live with one take. Podcasting is prerecorded and not live. Practice. Have fun! Create an outline, or script to impress your guests, establish a podcast introductory outline for your listeners upfront as the show begins and deliver your brand with style. Also, editing audio is not as easy as changing a script and doesn’t cost as much. Plus, the scripts can be published to your social media and websites. Have fun!Mixing with less is best
Mixing a podcast should be simple and not overdone. Process fundamentals such equalizer, compression, de-essing and noise reduction is beneficial. The final project should be around -16 LUFs.Budget twice as much time for mixing and editing
When budgeting a podcast for post-production, mixing, editing and quality control. I suggest to always allow twice as much time as expected. This budget rule of thumb allows time for at least two complete listen-throughs.
